SHIVON PUSHED TO HER feet and crossed the main room of Torak’s cabin. He’d transformed one wall into an external viewport while they dined. The ship was in orbit, and Shivon couldn’t help noticing the differences between OP3 and Earth. Most of the landmasses appeared blue, and the vast oceans were vivid green. Still, the familiar combination of forests, barren deserts, and icy wastelands made her think of home.

Torak moved silently, as always, but her pulse accelerated, and her skin tingled warning of his approach. He slipped his arm around her waist and pulled her back against him. “Are you avoiding the topic, or avoiding me?”

She closed her eyes and savored the press of his strong body. It had been days since he even allowed his hand to brush against her skin. She couldn’t believe how much she missed the simple pleasure of being touched. “My past is even more depressing than yours, and that’s saying a lot.” Turning within the circle of his arm, she tilted her head back and looked into his eyes. “I can’t deal with any more pain right now. I want to...share pleasure with my mate.”

His gaze narrowed, and his arm tightened. “Are you accepting my claim, or avoiding my questions?”

She sighed and looked away. “I’m intrigued by the idea of becoming your mate, but soul bonding seems like an impossible dream. I’ve never known anyone who was able to make a relationship last an entire lifetime. I’m not sure humans are wired that way.”

He cupped her chin and tilted her head back until he recaptured her gaze. “The soul bond is what makes lifelong relationships possible. There are no doubts, no secrets, no deception.”

Rather than reassure her, the concept made her tense. “Not everyone wants to be that transparent.”

“Why are you afraid?” He stroked the side of her face but allowed her visual retreat. “Nothing in your past can change the way I feel about you. You’re my mate. No one is more perfect or more important to me. I know you’ve suffered, but no one will ever harm you again.”

He started to kiss her. She twisted away, afraid of the sincerity in his voice. He obviously meant every word, honestly thought it would be that simple. Their genetics allowed them to procreate, so that guaranteed they’d be in love until the end of time. It was ridiculous.

And it terrified her. She didn’t understand the fear, but that didn’t make it any less real.

“This is why Farlo won’t open up to me,” she told him, determined to change the subject. “He knows I belong to you, whether I want to or not. No one would dare harm the commander’s woman, even if all I do is warm your bed.”

“I don’t want to talk about the elf,” he ground out, making the words harsh and insistent.

“And I don’t want to talk about anything else!” Anger strengthened her resolve, allowing her to look at him again.

His jaw clenched, and his gaze bore into hers. “I need to understand the forces that drive you.
